World Class Manufacturing Seminars

Background

This programme element is targeted at making firms more aware of the changing dynamics of the WCM challenge. Structured around a 10-stage Manufacturing Excellence model, and drawing extensively on data extracted from the firm-level benchmarking programme, these seminars are constituted in two forms:
• Hosting of an annual half-day WCM Seminar for Executives, and
• A two-day WCM Training Course for new Cluster members, or staff at existing Cluster members.

The key focus areas are:
• Total Quality Management (TQM)
• Just In Time Production (JIT), and
• Continuous Improvement (CI).

At each two-day training session, participants from KZN CTC member firms undergo training on the focus areas, followed by an opportunity to enter a clothing or textile factory and practically identify existing and/or potential world class practices. Participants then take part in a debriefing session, in which the brainstorming of competitiveness advancement opportunities, and sharing of ideas and experiences, is facilitated by a trainer. Experience to date suggests that this contributes substantially towards the dissemination of best practices between firms and the practical implementation of WCM principles. It is critical that the training of managers and supervisors occur as seamlessly as possible to facilitate the continuity and similarity of knowledge and skills, as well as assist with the development of WCM teams (e.g. kaizen teams, quality circles, etc.).
